An overview of child services offered is listed below.

The Child Care program ensures accessible and affordable childcare, supporting the independence of families by enabling parents to secure and maintain employment and meet the basic needs of their children. Services are also provided to support parents in school, children with developmental needs, protective services , and foster care. Social Services administers State and Smart Start funding for subsidy. We have a contract with New Hanover County Smart Start to administer the Smart Start subsidy funds. Child Care Subsidy services are based on eligibility, the need for the child care, and the availability of funds. Eligibility requirements include: residency, citizenship, age of child, reason for care and income (at or below 200% of poverty).

Smart Start of New Hanover County (SSNHC) can provide you with information on how to select quality child care. Social Workers receive and investigate reports of abuse, neglect or dependency of children.
