The Department of Social Services provides economic assistance to New Hanover County citizens with basic subsistence needs. We work in cooperation with other public and private organizations to protect children, strengthen families and help families and individuals achieve self-sufficiency.
Multi-language interpreting, sign language interpreters & TTY are available at no cost to clients; if needed, to obtain services.
Social Services is now operating out of the new Health and Human Services building (directly behind the former DSS building). While the former building is torn down and a new parking lot is built, clients can park behind the new building, entering the back parking lot from 16th Street (entrance is directly after Greenfield Street). Learn more about the Health and Human Services building here.
